SCI Dallas Officials Report Staff Assault

Dallas – (April 18) At 7:35 p.m. on April 17, 2014, an inmate assaulted a corrections officer at the State Correctional Institution at Dallas.

The inmate was exiting a housing unit and while passing by the two officers sitting at the desk, used a homemade weapon to assault the one officer. Immediately, the injured officer and the other officer raced to restrain the inmate.

Three other officers in the corridor area saw the inmate running from the unit and immediately apprehended him. The housing unit in which the incident occurred is located across from the prison’s infirmary. When the injured officer realized the situation was under control, he walked himself to the infirmary.

Employees provided immediate medical care, and local medical emergency crews were called to transport the employee for medical treatment. He is presently recovering and in good spirits.

“The entire incident, from start to finish, lasted only a few minutes,” said Superintendent Larry Mahally. “Staff should be commended for their quick response to this isolated incident.”

The inmate, a life sentenced inmate who has been housed at the prison since 1996, was immediately transferred to another state prison.

As a result of this assault, the entire prison was locked down and will remain locked down until further notice. Inmate programs and visits have been cancelled, and inmates will be fed in their cells.

Pennsylvania State Police were called to the prison and are conducting an investigation, as is the prison’s security staff and the Department of Corrections Security Division.

Are you trying to locate an inmate?
If so, use our Inmate Locator

Please note that the DOC Inmate Locator only provides very general information about DOC inmates.  Offenders that are serving county prison sentences or those DOC inmates that have been transferred to a county prison for court purposes, etc., are NOT included in this inmate locator, because county prisons are not under the jurisdiction of the DOC.  If you are trying to find someone in a county prison or someone who has just been arrested, you will need to contact the specific county prison directly.

We receive many e-mails from family members of inmates who are new receptions to the system and are worried about receiving phone calls from their loved ones.  Due to the busy schedule involving inmate orientation, and multiple assessments/evaluations performed upon initial reception, it can be several weeks until an inmate can set up his telephone list and get it approved in order to make phone calls.
